Particularly charming is the owner and chef, who goes by the nickname of Shokat (pronounced show-cut). This gentleman takes great pride in his work, and I think it shows through in the complex and fresh flavours in his dishes. The Pearl of India staff use whole spices in their cooking, and special Indian desserts can be made to order, as long as you are willing to call 24 hours in advance. You should be prepared for a lengthy meal time, as Indian food requires a lot of preparation time. It is not the service that is slow: rather, it is that the staff at this restaurant does not take culinary shortcuts. The attention to detail shows in the mouthwatering, satisfying dishes they consistently serve. The only improvement that could possibly be made to the Pearl is if the staff paid more attention to stocking wines that are as excellent as the cuisine. That would take this place from terrific to out-of-this-world. |
