1    Mon Dec 11 08:05:36 2006 Anonymous 2.20 The terrible experience I had at Casa Barcelona! actually prompted me to go through and sign up for an account on dine.to just so I could make sure no other customer goes to this restaurant. I have lived in Etobicoke all my life and never had such an embarrassing and infuriating experience as I did at at Barcelona. The food was bland, overpriced (avoid the asparagus soup particularly), the menu was illegible, and the service was terrible. Now, perhaps when the restaurant is trying to shine up on the critics one on one there is some sort of bohomie or quaint understanding between restauranteur and reviewer. But not on our night. No, the owner had to choose the night of my sister's engagement to act like a complete jackass. Maybe all the accolades this restaurant has received have gone to the head of the owner, because he had absolutely no trouble berating my friends and really putting a sour note on the whole evening. It was a group of about eight, so a service charge was automatically added to the bill (for groups over 6). Otherwise, I would have had NO trouble nixing the tip. Two of my friends were having a conversation at the end of the table when the owner came up to explain the 'tapas' situation. Clearly, they were not interested in hearing his explanation, but he took a moment to embarrass them and said "excuse, me, I'm talking..." and then once more for good measure "Excuse ME! I'm talking now" until we had all come to heel. Now, I know that customer-proprietor relations are handled differently in Latin American countries (where this chap is allegedly from), but this was particularly bad for customer-is-always-right Toronto. If you want an authentic Spanish experience (bad service and all), then go to this restaurant. If you want a good night out with reasonable prices and decent food, go to Swiss Chalet down the street. That being said, the sausage was very good. Then again, it is his mother's recipe.
