The Uptown might be the only place in the Kawarthas to go if you crave the old-fashioned style halibut and chips that used to come wrapped in newspaper. I'm a bit tired of what some of cottage country restaurants call "fish and chips" - fish that seems to be straight from a box instead of the sea. At Uptown you're served the real thing. The owner explained to me that within three years halibut may be scarce so she has also introduced an alternative to halibut. On my last visit I tried this new fish offering and found it to be quite comparable to halibut - don't be afraid to try it. Management has added some nice touches to the menu - there is poached fish for folks looking for something light and a couple of seafood salads. Of course there are the old standbys of hamburgers and grilled cheese for those who don't feel like fish. The restaurant itself is clean and cozy and the servers very friendly - it's sort of like sitting in a friends kitchen. There is also lots of patio seating. Basically this is a great place to get a good feed of fish and chips. |
