Thu Jul 19 14:12:03 2007 Anonymous 10.00 have never been disappointed at this restaurant and have been many times.
Fri Aug 13 00:00:09 2004 paunchmanure 8.60 I wish there were more German/Austrian/Swiss restaurant around to compare BUT this is a fine restaurant hidden away in the Hammer. The homemade spaetzle is perfect for all the nice meat dishes. There is a homemade quality to allt he dishes, some are not perfect and I do not favour the blue cheese sauce dishes. It is very much like eating in a good town restaurant in Austria, and the imported beer is fresh! It may not be perfect, but this place is great. Far better than the Musket in Etobicoke. Lunchtime is busy.
Thu Jan 22 13:09:56 2004 FrankTheRabidBunny 5.00 I agree with wm. I have walked out of many restaurants due to a sitting cloud of smoke. And like previously mentioned, it is unfortunate as many of these restaurants are great establishments. As an ex-smoker, I understand where ratbatblue is coming from, however, he missed a point about Hamilton's smoking bylaw. They do have smoking establishments still, which allow anyone over the age of 18 only. For example, Tailgate Charlies downtown. So if you still need to puff and eat at the same time (dont know why you cant wait until afterwards) then visit the 18 establishments. Most other cities (Burlington, St. Catharines) have gone to 100% non-smoking, so feel lucky in Hamilton.
Sat Jan 17 02:33:48 2004 ratbatblue 9.80 I totally understand where the non-smoking view point comes from. Bottom line is it should be up to the owner to decide if smoking is allowed or not. Not city hall who collects business taxes and offers nothing in return. Non-smokers are certainly free to avoid smoking establishments. Sounds easy enough to me. I'm sure the owners of such establishments are aware of that. How unfortunate to read a review based on smoking by-laws. I really don't see where a political agenda is appropriate when reviewing a dining establishment. Since its been brought up though, I guess it can be addressed. Zum Linzer is a regular stop for me and I've never been disappointed. On a broader scale though, anyone who wants to politically stop smoking in restaurants may well consider cities like Brantford where a number of places had to close following the ban. You may win a political fight, but you may also end up with less places to 'not smoke'.
Sat Jan 17 00:33:16 2004 wm 5.00 Smoking, although political, isn't always a political statement. As a non-smoker I understand what the original poster was saying - smoking establishments can drive away business. I have personally left and never come back to restaurants because of the heavy smoke. Some had really nice food. For non-smokers second hand smoke can be completely distracting and can ruin a nice meal. In other cases too much smoke can actually burn the eyes and throat. It's not a matter of complaining for the sake of it - smoke is a tremendous irritant. (physically, not politically) I understand the smokers feel that non-smokers are pushing them away but its the smoke we don't want. The company is always welcome.
Tue Dec 16 11:01:06 2003 darkstranger 4.00 I can't really tell if the food was good or not, as this place filled up very quickly with chain smokers ... it was disgusting! Smoking should be banned from all restaurants, PERIOD! I don't really care if smokers choose to poison themselves, but what really pisses me off is the attitude that they have a right to make life miserable for others. The majority of people are non-smokers, and yet we still put up with this! I can't wait until smoking is banned in all public places!!! As for this restaurant, if you don't smoke ... avoid it at all costs. I left feeling like my evening was ruined, and smelling like an ash tray! If the owners wish to stay in business, I suggest they pay attention to the movement towards smoke-free public spaces, and not simply wait for legislation to be passed enforcing it.
